The studio also enters many of its classes into several competitions each year. Students ages 5 and up can compete in solos, duets, and group dances for a variety of prizes and awards. Randone says kids of all types and ages enjoy working hard on their dance routines for competitions.

“They talk about it constantly,” said Randone. “It keeps them coming back for more and more practice.”

Marissa Kauffman, a nine year old from Syosset, also says that competition is one of her main reasons for working so hard all year.

“Going to comps makes us feel like we’re going to the grammys. We get all dressed up and practice like crazy,” said Kauffman.

Kauffman, also an avid soccer player, says that participating in dance year round keeps her feeling fit and flexible when soccer season comes around.

“I like being able to feel good year round instead of losing that feeling when I’m not playing soccer,” she explained.

Randone says that’s another reason why so many students choose dance as a passion that they can practice year round. She believes being able to stay in shape can help boost the skills of those students who participate in other sports.

“We have some students who are about to graduate high school and have been coming ever since they were toddlers. The studio is so welcoming and rewarding that students never really want to leave,” Kellerman said.

For now, the studio is working hard to prepare its students for competition. Many of those students have been competing with the studio for years, with some even getting the chance to travel across the country.

“That’s the best part of dance, besides it’s health benefits,” said Randone. “I truly believe that it can be one of the most rewarding forms of expression.”
